The best thing Pristine Exteriors had was buried three clicks deep

How a 9.5MB WordPress site became a fast one built around thirty before and after sliders, without losing a single ranking or a minute of business email.

The Client

About Pristine Exteriors

John White builds decks, fences, retaining walls, paving and lawns across West Auckland, out of Henderson Valley. He is also a local firefighter, which is the sort of detail that does more for trust than any amount of copy.

He photographs every job before he starts and again when it is finished. Thirty of those pairs existed before we wrote a word, which made the job less about invention and more about getting out of their way.

The Problem

What wasn’t working

1

The homepage loaded 9.5MB, most of it full-size photos straight off a camera. Out west on a couple of bars, it would not finish loading before someone gave up on it.

2

His before and after photos, far and away the most convincing thing he had, sat in a plain row behind a Portfolio dropdown where almost nobody would find them.

3

There were typos live on the service pages people actually read, and no privacy policy at all on a site collecting names, numbers and email addresses through a contact form.

Before and After

The transformation

Fitting, for a business that sells before and afters.

Before
×9.5MB homepage on WordPress
×Before and afters hidden behind a dropdown
×Static photo rows, nothing to compare
×Typos live on the service pages
×No privacy policy, on a site collecting contact details
After
Under half a megabyte, static, on Cloudflare's edge
Thirty draggable sliders as the centre of the site
Drag any job and watch the yard change under your thumb
Every project write-up kept, tucked into accordions
Privacy policy written, cookieless analytics, no consent banner
Our Approach

The decisions that shaped the site

Every choice came back to one person: a homeowner in West Auckland deciding whether this is the bloke who should build their deck.

1
Lead with the photos he already had
John photographs every job before he starts and again when he finishes. That evidence was the whole argument for hiring him, and the old site treated it as an appendix. We rebuilt the site around it and put the work on the homepage.
2
Make people drag, not scroll
A row of paired photos asks the visitor to do the comparing. A slider does it for them. Thirty jobs became thirty drag handles, and watching a bare dirt yard turn into a finished deck under your own thumb is a far better sales pitch than a paragraph about workmanship.
3
Keep every word of his write-ups
Each job already had a Challenge, Solution and Result written by John, thick with the suburbs, materials and terrain people actually search for. Dumping thirty of those onto a page would have buried the photos, so they sit in dropdowns under each slider. Google reads all of it, the visitor sees a clean page.
4
Protect the rankings he already had
He had years of indexed pages. Every legacy address still resolves, so the Portfolio, Pricing and Contact Us URLs people had bookmarked or Google had ranked all land on the right page instead of a 404.
5
Static instead of WordPress
WordPress was the source of the slowness and the maintenance. The new site is plain HTML on Cloudflare's edge. Nothing to update, nothing to get hacked, and no plugin quietly adding another megabyte to the homepage.
6
Treat his email as the fragile thing
Moving a domain is routine. Moving one with a live business inbox on it is not. His mail records were audited against the live DNS before anything changed, the switch was split into two steps, and his email was proven working before the site moved.
What We Built

Everything in the engagement

Sixteen page website

Built from scratch as static HTML, deployed on Cloudflare Pages, hosted in his own account from day one.

Thirty before and after sliders

Every job draggable, on the work page and on the relevant service pages, with the job and suburb in every image tag.

Project stories kept in full

All of his Challenge, Solution and Result write-ups carried across into accordions under each slider, so the keywords stay indexed without the wall of text.

Video walk-throughs

His three project videos embedded as click to load, so an unwatched video costs the page nothing.

Built for search

Per page titles and descriptions, structured data for the business and the FAQs, a sitemap, and every existing URL kept alive with a 301.

Privacy policy

Written from scratch, since he was collecting contact details without one. Analytics is cookieless, so the site needs no consent banner.

Enquiry form

Delivers to his inbox with the service, name and suburb already in the subject line, so a reply is one tap.

Domain and email migration

Moved from Hostinger DNS to Cloudflare with all of his mail records audited and carried across, then verified before the site was pointed over.

Speed

The homepage went from 9.5MB to under half a megabyte, with photos converted to WebP and sized for the screen asking for them.
